چکیده

nterferons, naturally occuring glycoproteins with molecular weights of approximately 20,000 daltons, possess antiviral, antiproliferative, and immune-stimulating properties. They are classified into 3 antigenically distinct forms that are derived from different cell types. Alpha (or) interferons are derived from leukocytes, beta ([3) interferons from fibroblasts, and gamma (/) interferons from T lymphocytes. They have been approved for use in the treatment of condylomata acuminata, hepatitis B and C, and hairy-cell leukemia. While naturally occurring ot interferons can be obtained from pooled leukocytes derived from whole blood and then stimulated to produce interferon [or-n3 Alferon (Purdue Frederick Company, Norwalk, CT); or-N1 WellferonTM (Pacific Pharmacy, San Francisco, CA)], they can also be produced through recombinant DNA technology [o-2a RoferonT= (Roche Laboratories, Nutley, NJ); ot-2b Intron A (Schering Corporation, Kenilworth, NJ)]. ot-2a and ot-2b differ by only amino acid in position -23. The natural interferons are really mixtures of 14 or more types, while the recombinant types are pure quantities of a single species of interferon.

Interferons (IFNs) are pleotropic cytokines with strong anti-viral and immunomodulatory properties. Their function is dependent to signaling pathway upon binding to IFN receptor. Both pro- and anti-inflammatory effects are seen in interferons-related immune responses. While, interferons are in direct correlation with autoantibodies production during autoimmunity, they have protective effects. T...

The Jak-Stat Signaling Pathway of Interferons System: Snapshots

Interferons (IFNs) are a family of small regulatory glycoproteins that play a central role in the defense against viral infections. Although IFNs have been initially discovered as antiviral factors, today they are known as an integral part of the cytokine network that affect a wide range of biological processes. IFNs exert their pleiotropic effects through their multisubunit cell surface recept...

Interferons as therapeutic agents for infectious diseases.

This article explains the rationale for development of interferons as therapeutic agents, and describes commercial products available today. It also provides a summary of studies that have been performed with interferons for use as exogenous biological response modifiers in viral infections. Overall, the best data exist for treatment of viral hepatitis B and C, for which interferons are a corne...

Specific molecular activities of recombinant and hybrid leukocyte interferons.

Hybrid interferon DNA recombinants were constructed from the IFLrA and IFLrD leukocyte interferon-coding sequences. Each of the hybrid interferons was purified with the use of a monoclonal antibody to human leukocyte interferon. Three amino acid residues were identified, one or all of which function to potentiate antiviral activity on feline cells and reduce activity on human cells. Because at ...

Regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation by interferons.

The interferons are a widely studied group of proteins which were first identified by their ability to protect cells against virus infections (Stewart, 1979). They are synthesized and secreted by a variety of cell types in response to several classes of inducers (notably virus infections) and exert their effects in vivo as a result of interaction with other cells in distant parts of the body. I...

Interferon Induction by Viruses

Interferons are proteins of cellular origin capable of conferring virus resistance to vertebrate cells. Most cells do not produce interferons except in response to proper stimulation. Clearly, the stimulation of interferon production encompasses two phenomena. When stimulated, some cell systems produce their interferons by synthesizing new proteins. Other cell systems do not require the synthes...
